Improving the Quality of Social Life in Asia Pacific: a Challenge for Sociology

Intensive social change and transformation at the local, national and global level have resulted in a more dynamic, integrated, and yet still diverse Asia Pacific region. Different social configurations have emerged in sub-regions and in nations: some are better off while others remain stagnant or have gone into a decline. The Asia Pacific region has become more stratified in every sector of life. Gaps are widening between rich and poor countries, between urban and rural areas, in relation to gender, and among classes and ethnic groups. The worst problems for the region include growing poverty due to rising food and fuel prices, environmental degradation, political and business corruption, and the eruption of social conflicts based on socio-cultural identities and/or politico-economic resources.
Responding to this situation, it is demanded of sociologists - both as academics and public scholars - to use their 'sociological imagination' to provide conceptual definitions, indicators, and theoretical explanations of current trends and phenomena. These analyses should be complemented by participatory social policy development and the creation of workable solutions to improve the quality of social life. Moreover, sociologists should offer models for implementing good governance, and for developing productive synergies between society and corporations. It can be argued that society deserves more comprehensive solutions for social transformation from sociology, rather than merely remaining the object of study.
The APSA 2009 Bali Conference aims to broadly and critically define and analyse contemporary social issues in the region, and to suggest solutions to improve the quality of social life in Asia Pacific societies. The conference theme will be reflected in the sessions, papers, discussions and recommendations of the conference.
OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE
1. The main goal of the 9th APSA conference is to provide an opportunity for academics and professionals with a broadly sociological background and/or related fields of study to participate, and to share their research and theorising.
2. Since this conference is not only an academic gathering, the purpose is also to develop collaboration and cooperation among sociological institutions, academics, policy makers and professionals to contribute to the improvement of communities in the region.
3. The goal is also to attract new sociologists (including postgraduate students) in the Asia Pacific region to participate and contribute to the development and application of sociology.
